Open garden day raises funds for local care centre
Posted: 14/07/2009 10:24:23
An open garden day at a local residence will raise funds for a North Devon respite care unit.
For several years Stan and Sue Burton have opened their garden at Lower Buttercombe Cottage, West Down to help raise funds for Welland House in Barnstaple.
Run by Devon County Council, Welland House is a respite care unit for children with disabilities aged from two to 18 years, who live in North Devon. The money raised from the open day will go directly on special treats for children at the unit.
Stan and Sue moved to their house in 1988 and have created a garden from a virtual field. The garden is full of perennial plants, meandering paths, three ponds which are connected by a cascade of water. There are many delightful hidden corners to discover.
Also on the open day there are stalls with handicraft, bric-a-brac, plants, art exhibitions and many more.
Visitors can take a cream tea among the splendour of the plants, whilst listening to the melodious ringing from Bishops Tawton Hand Bell Ringers.
Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for children's health and wellbeing, and local Devon County Councillor for the area, said: "This open day will give the local community the chance to get together and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings, as well as raising additional funds for Welland House.
"Respite care is an important service for parents and carers of children with complex special needs, as well as for the children themselves.
"It gives the children access to a range of specialist services and activities, as well as the opportunity to socialise with other children."
Welland House provides an extensive range of specialised equipment and runs a range of activities for some ten or twelve children who attend the centre at any one time, including trips to play parks, the cinema and local theme parks.
The unit also provides a range of services including physiotherapists, speech therapists and other specialists to work with the children and advise the team of experienced care staff.
The date of the garden open day is Sunday 26 July 2009, from 10am to 5pm. Entrance fee is £1, with all proceeds going to Welland House.
