Police and Council target unfit taxis in Chippy

Posted: 18/10/2006 15:29:27

Thames Valley Police Roads Policing Department in conjunction with West Oxfordshire District Council Licensing Service conducted a joint operation to target unroadworthy licensed private hire and hackney carriage vehicles last Friday (13/10).

Between 7pm and 9pm officers targeted licensed vehicles operating in the Chipping Norton area. Vehicles were stopped for issues such as the age and appearance of the vehicle.

A/Sgt Rosemary Dilsaver, from Chipping Norton Police Station, said: "Taxis are an essential part of the public transport infrastructure and the public rightly expects them to be safe, properly licensed and well maintained. While most vehicles and operators abide by the law, there are some who do not and therefore tarnish the good reputation of the majority. These checks are one of the measures employed to support the law-abiding majority of taxi operators."

Several licensed vehicles were stopped and examined and all the vehicles passed a police road safety check. Those that were stopped were asked to produce their driving licence, MOT, and insurance within seven days if they were not in possession of them.

Councillor Ian Hudspeth, Chairman of the Council's Licensing Committee, said: "This was very efficient and highly organised by the Council and Thames Valley Police. We take the health and safety of the public very seriously and expect all private hire and hackney vehicles to be maintained at the highest standards. This is just one of several methods by which we ensure that taxi operators give the best possible service to the residents of West Oxfordshire."

A/Sgt Dilsaver continued: "Future operations are already planned to target the minority of drivers that are failing to maintain the required high standards of such licensed vehicles. West Oxfordshire District Council has 145 licensed vehicles in the area."
