Firefighters rescue schoolboy from mud

A nine-year-old boy was rescued from mud off the Isle of Sheppey by Kent Fire and Rescue Service at the weekend.

The youngster was with a friend, walking his dog along the cliffs at Warden Bay on Saturday afternoon when they went onto the beach and he became stuck up to his knees in soft, liquefied mud.

He managed to raise the alarm and two crews from Sheppey Fire Station were sent to the scene along with Kent Police, coastguards and paramedics.

Sheppey Crew Manager Jim Ashby said: “The boy was only 20 feet from hard standing so he hadn’t ventured far and fortunately we were able to get close to him and used our special mud rescue equipment to loosen the suction around his legs and pull him gently out using a harness.
“He was checked over by paramedics before getting a bit of a telling off from his dad. The area by the cliffs has become quite treacherous so we’re warning people not to go out there or they could find themselves in trouble.”
