Didmarton Bluegrass Festival
Posted: 24/03/2010 12:31:02
Kemble Airfield, Kemble, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Now in its 22nd year, Didmarton Bluegrass Festival, held annually at the Kemble Airfield site, Glos, is considered by many to be Britain's premier bluegrass and acoustic music festival. Attracting the top names from the UK and international bluegrass scenes, this year the packed festival bill will be headed by the multi Grammy award-winning Peter Rowan (plus his full Bluegrass Band) and the dynamic, Nashville-revered Claire Lynch Band-who have collectively won more IBMA player of the year awards than I can count.
Taking place between 2-5 September 2010, the festival also ensures a diverse and quality approach, offering a range of musical styles that further embrace blues, jazz, folk and everything acoustically in-between. Providing an unrivalled atmosphere and the best beer prices on the festival circuit, Didmarton Bluegrass Festival 2010 will be biggest and best yet; packing in around 35 artists, during nine scheduled concerts along with instrument and dance workshops, excellent camping, showers, great food, bonfires, banjos and a biker run bar that never seems to close!
The 2010 event will be kicking off on Thursday 2 September with a special one-off, separately charged concert by one of the finest acoustic-roots groups in the country. Folk superstars Show of Hands will headline the main stage in a stomping event that will secure Didmarton as the true music-lovers festival. Camping will also be available for this concert.
Usual festival play will then resume on Friday 3 September with an impressive bluegrass programme to match our distinguished guests from the USA. The list of acclaimed artists are endless and include the creative and high-class sounds of Leon Hunt with his band The Scoville Units, the wildly entertaining Thunderbridge Bluegrass Boys, the old time sounds of Jock Tildesley and Vera Van Heeringenn, A Band Like Alice, The New Essex Bluegrass Band and Monroe's Revenge. North Carolina native and renowned flat-picker Jack Lawrence will be joined by UK award-winning Richard Plank to add a nice relaxed touch to the bluegrass proceedings.
The 'alternative' music front offers an equally illustrious line-up as led by west-country comic legends Bill Smarme and The Bizness, the cool 60's US west-coast sounds of The Stone Saloon, and Fastest To Canada with some of the funkiest folk you will ever hear. Several open mic sessions will be running throughout the weekend and there are yet more bands to be confirmed.
The 2010 Didmarton raffle will be drawn at the event with some great bounty on offer. We have been very kindly sponsored by two highly respected luthiers; Tom Nechville for the USA and Phil Davidson of the UK have donated a “Midnight Hunt” Model Phantom banjo and an Ashville Deluxe Mandolin respectively as two of the prizes. All proceeds will go to helping young musicians to attend Sore Fingers Week. Both Tom and Phil will have stalls within the friendly traders area at the festival and will be running displays and workshops to inspire us all to learn more.
The festival will have all the usual Didmarton attractions; concerts, dance displays, instrumental seminars, the tuition tent, a wide range of traders and quality catering all contributing to the biggest programme of the 2010 Bluegrass festival season.
Our hosts the OGRI MCC are totally committed to helping us run a successful event and will continue to serve drinks at rock bottom prices for extended hours during the festival. And we can not only look forward the infamously raucous nightly entertainment around the now traditional midnight bonfire, but also separate male and female shower blocks (was that a boo I heard from a male member of the audience)! Please note that all the site facilities will be operational from Wednesday afternoon until Monday morning. The bar will be open from Thursday through to Sunday night.
Tickets are now on sale on our website www.didmarton-bluegrass.co.uk - we recommend you purchase these early to benefit from the advance booking discount.
You just cannot miss this festival so book tickets, put it in your diary and look forward to the best weekend of the year!
