Herefordshire hosts first national orchard event

Posted: 26/07/2011 15:06:20

As part of Herefordshire Year in the Orchard, the county hosted the first national orchard event when more than 100 orchard professionals. owners and enthusiasts from across the UK descended on the spectacular Homme House in Much Marcle to talk apple, pears and fruit trees.

“The Orchards - past, present & future” conference was the first national orchard event recognising traditional orchards as a UK-wide biodiversity habitat with their own Habitat Action Plan.

The conference didn't only celebrate traditional orchards but also recognised the importance of commercial 'bush' orchards and the part that community orchard projects can play in conserving this country's orchard heritage.

Speakers included the Traditional Orchard Inventory project, Colwall Orchard Group, London Orchard Project, Herefordshire Orchard Community Evaluation, Scrapbook of an Orchard as well as Natural England and the Bulmers Foundation orchard sustainability project.

Delegates also had the chance to sample the best of Herefordshire's hospitality with locally sourced food and cider and perry tasting hosted by Westons Cider.

James Bisset, Herefordshire Council’s principal countryside officer and one of the organisers said: "All the hard work by the organisers was greatly appreciated by the delegates who had come from all parts of England as well as Wales and Scotland for the conference.

“This day has really shown just how innovative Herefordshire is being towards conserving and celebrating its orchard heritage and I think several other counties may want to follow our lead and have their own Year in the Orchard type celebrations," he added.

The presentation and other information is now available to download from - look for National Orchard Habitat Conference page

This was just one of many and varied events taking place during 2011, helping celebrate Herefordshire's orchard heritage - Herefordshire Year in the Orchard. To find out more about future events and orchard initiatives please go to
