Christmas lantern procession to light up Carterton
Posted: 08/11/2011 15:38:34
People living in and around Carterton are being invited to take part in free workshops to create lanterns ready to light up part of the town for its second ‘Winter Lights Procession’ on 9th December.
Artist Dionne Barber will be returning to Carterton to show people how to make and decorate lanterns using paper and willow.
Free drop-in workshop sessions for residents of all ages are taking place between 10am and 3pm on:
Sunday 20 November and Saturday 3 December at Carterton Community Centre
On Friday 9th December residents will be able to take part in the procession with their lanterns. The procession will start at 6.30pm from St John’s Church and end at Carterton Community Centre on Shilton Park with Christmas celebrations, including carols and Father Christmas.
Cllr Richard Langridge, Cabinet Member for Local Economy and Communities at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “Carterton’s winter lantern rocession brings Christmas cheer and is also an excellent way of bringing the community together. Last year’s first ever procession was very popular and so we are once again delighted to be warmly welcoming residents of all ages to join the workshops and procession celebrations.”
Sue Selwyn-Smith from Carterton Children’s Centre said: “Taking part has been a really valuable experience for this group – it’s great to be involved in a wider community project.”
The workshops and procession are being funded by West Oxfordshire District Council using developer contributions received as part of the North East Carterton Public Art programme. The procession is also supported by Carterton Lions and Carterton Community Centre.
For more information about the procession, call Carterton Community Centre on 01993 842807, West Oxfordshire District Council on 01993 861080 or www.westoxon.gov.uk/winterlights.
