Fostering recruitment road show comes to town
Posted: 11/05/2012 10:47:32
People interested in fostering a child or young person are invited to meet foster carers and talk to the council’s fostering team at a recruitment drive taking place in Hereford next week.
Herefordshire Council is taking its fostering recruitment road show to Hereford’s High Town on 17 May. The fostering team will be there from 9.30am to 3.30pm to talk to anyone who thinks they may be able to give a child or young person a loving home, either just for a short break, or for a more long-term living arrangement.
Currently, there are 240 looked after children in Herefordshire and the number is growing.
“When a child or young person needs looking after, it is important that they retain some continuity in their lives. As long as it’s safe for them to do so, they need to stay at the same school, live in the same area and retain the same friends,” said Joanna King, team manager.
“So it’s important that we recruit Herefordshire people to foster Herefordshire children and young people.
She continued, “We need carers to look after children of all ages, but particularly for long-term placements for children aged 11 and upwards, mother and baby placements and sibling groups.
“Fostering with the council provides carers with good support networks, excellent training opportunities and regular contact with social workers.
“Our road show gives people the chance to talk to existing foster carers and ask them meaningful questions about their experiences. If they decide to pursue the opportunity of becoming a carer themselves, our team will talk them through the application process. We help and support our carers all the way - the work is challenging, but very rewarding.”
As part of the recruitment campaign the council’s fostering team will be launching a DVD in the summer, which will be used to help explain the fostering process and showcase the benefits of fostering a child in Herefordshire.
