Fun for all the family at 1940s weekend street party in Coleshill
Posted: 12/07/2012 17:19:59
Coleshill Underground, 15-16 September 2012 Step back in time at Coleshill Underground, a nostalgic 1940s weekend family street-party with swing bands, food and war-time re-enactments at the National Trust village of Coleshill on 15-16 September, 2012. Get in the mood with the Austin 7 Club, military vehicles, and learn of life in wartime Britain, including home front cooking and ration books. There’ll be fun for all the family, with code-breaking, face-painting, kid’s trails and puzzles, a prize for the best dressed 1940s-styled visitor, and even a specially brewed Auxilier Ale. The weekend-long event marks the 70th anniversary of a top secret wartime operation based at Coleshill where 3,000 men were trained under conditions of the utmost secrecy. This secret British Resistance, known as the Auxiliary Unit, trained in a series of underground bunkers at Coleshill. A replica of one of these bunkers has been built underground and will be officially opened over the weekend. Built thanks to Heritage Lottery Funding, the new bunker is an exact replica of the original 70-year-old training “funk hole” at Coleshill. Alongside the recently refurbished Guards House, it is hoped that the new underground base will offer a vital insight into the world of the brave Auxiliers, the country’s last line of defence in case of invasion by Hitler’s Germany. Coleshill Underground, 15-16 September, 2012, 11am to 5pm, Coleshill, Swindon, SN6 7PT (just off the B4019 between Faringdon and Highworth). Admission £3 adult, £1.50 child.
