Drivers in Chipping Norton targeted - road safety

Posted: 16/11/2006 15:27:29

Police officers in Chipping Norton put a cancelled training day to good use on Thursday 9th November by re-enforcing the road safety message to motorists.

Officers from the Carterton and Chipping Norton Neighbourhood Management Teams undertook spot checks looking for drivers using a mobile phone illegally or not wearing a seatbelt.

The checks were carried out on the A361 Burford Road, Horsefair/High Street and New Street in the morning before moving onto Churchill Road, Banbury Road and London Road in the afternoon. In total, seven drivers were stopped for not wearing a seatbelt and one was stopped for illegally using a mobile phone while driving. All those caught were given fixed penalties.

"The unusually high number of officers available yesterday due to the cancelled training session, meant we could utilize resources to reinforce the road safety message to drivers," explains Acting Sergeant Rosemary Dilsaver from the Chipping Norton Neighbourhood Policing Team. "We received several positive comments from members of the public pleased to see high police visibility in Chipping Norton and the results we achieved proved that some drivers still aren't listening to the law concerning the use of seatbelts and mobile phones whilst driving."
