Dreaming of a green Christmas in West Oxon...

Posted: 06/12/2006 12:55:15

You may be dreaming of a white Christmas, but in West Oxfordshire people are being urged to think green when it comes to household waste - and be in with the chance of winning 50.

A massive three million tonnes of extra waste will be generated in Britain over the festive period as we consume five and a half million jars of mincemeat, 12 million jars of pickles and send up to a billion Christmas cards.

In a bid to minimise waste and increase recycling here, West Oxfordshire District Council is sending out an early Christmas present. A clear Christmas sack designed to hold one recyclable material only - paper or plastic or card - is being delivered to every household in the District. Residents also have the opportunity to enter a free prize draw, with lucky winners starting the New Year 50 better off.

To be entered into the free prize draw, residents need to pledge online to recycle all that they can in their black recycling box via the Council website, www.westoxon.gov.uk or by calling 01993 861020. Five lucky winners will each receive 50 - subject to a random spot-check of their waste bin and recycling boxes during January or February to ensure recycling is taking place.

Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: "If all that extra three million tonnes of waste goes to landfill, useful resources and energy will be lost forever. That is why we are sending out this special Christmas message to all residents to think before they reach for the waste bin this year, and offering this 50 incentive to really make people think about what they can recycle."

"When your clear sack comes through your door, please remember to use it."

Householders can use the special Christmas sacks in addition to their black recycling boxes and are asked to leave them out at the same time as their recycling box collection during the week after New Year only.

Sacks will also be handed out, along with low-energy light bulbs and Waste Reduction Packs, at Christmas Waste Roadshows organised by the Council in conjunction with Witney-based energy advice centre TVEC, at:

The Woolgate Centre, Witney, on Thursday, December 14, 10am-2pm

The Co-op, Carterton, on Monday, December 18, 10am-2pm

The Guildhall, Chipping Norton, on Wednesday, December 20, 10am to midday (there will also be talks on energy saving and recycling at this event)

It is the first year that clear sacks are being sent to every household in the District. Last year, sacks were delivered to households in Chipping Norton and handed out at Waste Roadshows, and the amount of recycling collected in the District rose by 26 per cent in January 2006 (986.7 tonnes) compared to January 2005 (783.8 tonnes). That meant an extra 203 tonnes - equivalent to 17 waste collection trucks full of rubbish was recycled, rather than sent to landfill.
