Man sentenced to 5 years for attack on mosque
Posted: 05/01/2007 17:47:05
Today, Friday 5th January 2007, Mark Bulman, appeared at Swindon Crown Court, having previously pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.
Overnight 16th/17th August 2006, a window was smashed at the Swindon Mosque in Broad Street at the junction of Ponting Street. A bottle, containing some form of accelerant was thrown through the window. Fortunately, it did not ignite. Racist graffiti was also daubed on the outside of the building.
Acting on information, a 22 year old local man was very quickly arrested nearby in Fleming Way, Swindon on suspicion of attempt arson, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon.
Mark BULMAN from Montrose Close, Moredon, Swindon, was subsequently charged with attempt arson, four counts of religiously aggravated criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon. He appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on Friday 18th August 2006 when he was remanded in custody.
Detective Inspector Tim Corner, Swindon CID: “Crimes of this nature can have an adverse impact on local communities and create fear. The sentencing today is a clear message that hate crime is taken very seriously by the Police and partner agencies, including the judicial system.”
Sergeant Anne EGAN, Swindon Police Community and Race Relations Department: “Swindon Police are committed to building trust and mutual respect in the town. Officers meet, on a regular basis, with various community leaders and individuals to look at ways of working together to provide reassurance, reduce the fear of crime and increase confidence to report crimes. Everyone, from whatever background, is encouraged to report crime and particularly incidents of racially or religiously motivated crime. By talking to Officers and reporting hate crime, members of the public may prevent crimes happening and help to make Swindon a safer place for us all.”
