New cycle stands celebrate Elgar the cyclist

Posted: 10/01/2007 02:49:57

Worcestershire County Council has installed new cycle stands and a plaque celebrating Edward Elgar’s status as a keen cyclist behind the Elgar Statue in the High Street, Worcester.

Five stands and a plaque have been installed at a cost of £2,000 following requests from the South Worcestershire Cycle Group. A plaque detailing Elgar and his link to cycling has also been installed in the footway.

Cllr Derek Prodger, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said “Elgar was one of Worcestershire’s most famous sons and he produced some of his best music when he was active and cycling. He would cycle miles on his bike, Mr Phoebus. As a result of these new stands we hope more people will find it easier to access this area of Worcester by bike.”

This work is in addition to recently installed cycle parking in The Cross, Angel Street and Fish Street as part of the Choose How You Move project which encourages more walking, cycling, car sharing and use of public transport.

The wording on the plaque reads:

Elgar the Cyclist

Worcester’s favourite son and England’s favourite composer, Sir Edward Elgar, was a keen cyclist. He started cycling in 1900 when living near Malvern, and his first bicycle was a Royal Sunbeam that he nicknamed Mr Phoebus.

Elgar’s most creative period, the first decade of the 20th century, were his cycling years. He would often cycle 50 miles in a day, and found inspiriation for his music when riding in the countryside of Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and occasionally Shropshire. One of his cycling companions remembered: “As we rode, he would often become silent and I knew that some new melody or, more probably, some new piece of orchestral texture, had occurred to him”.
