Councillors look into Exeter Airport night flights

Posted: 10/01/2007 11:39:19

A task group of Devon County Councillors looking into the environmental impact of the potential expansion of Exeter Airport is recommending that the Council should use what influence it has to seek limits on non-emergency night flights to and from Exeter Airport.

This call follows a series of meetings where evidence was heard from members of the public who complained of noise from aircraft, particularly at night.

The task group also hopes to meet a representative of Royal Mail which charters most of the present night flights, to ask how they fit into its policies on the environment and corporate social responsibility.

The task group's recommendations are expected to be considered by the County Council's Environment, Economy Culture Overview/Scrutiny Committee on 9 January 2007. If these recommendations are approved, they will be referred to the County Council's Executive for consideration.

Notes

Under the Airports Act 1986 council-owned airports must be operated by "arm's-length companies" on a strictly commercial basis. The Council does not control the number or timing of flights or set targets for future passenger numbers.

The Civil Aviation Authority regulates all matters relating to air traffic control and flight patterns. Environmental issues are regulated by the Government's Environment Agency and by District and City Councils as environmental health authorities.

The number of night flights regularly using Exeter Airport is 3 in and 3 out per night (mail flights) and is lower than it has been in the past. Night flights have operated from Exeter for many years.
