Library careers service helps people get on track
Posted: 10/01/2007 11:56:23
Over 100 people got their careers on track in the last 18 months after seeking advice from a special service at Exeter Central Library.
The Careers Advice Sessions run every Wednesday and most of the enquiries were about the best way to write a CV.
Staff were able to offer books and a software package to help with the task, and were also able to advise people on enquiries ranging from how to gain literacy and numerous qualifications to women wanting to return to work and those who have excellent qualifications but speak English as a foreign language.
Since the sessions started in June 2005, 111 people have used the service.
Councillor Sheila Hobden, Executive Member for Culture, said: "The service came about as an extension of the all resources in the Reference Library which already support those seeking work and changing career. These include Jobline, a nationwide database of job vacancies, updated daily, and Pathfinder which is a program designed to find the top twenty careers most suited to an individual based on their skills, interests and qualifications.
"I am pleased the sessions have proved popular and useful. We are very grateful to the staff for the knowledge and time they have offered in this way".
Out of 55 people who answered feedback forms about the service, 54 said the session had given them new ideas and 51 said they felt more confident in dealing with their situation.
The Library Service is hoping to establish a regular conversation group for ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) based on reading.
The sessions run between 10.15am and 12noon in the Reference Library section. From Wednesday 17 January the service will be extended to work in partnership with Nextstep to offer appointments between 2 p.m and 3.30pm - ring 01392 384206 for an appointment .
