Schoolboy attacked by hammer in Wroughton

Posted: 11/01/2007 23:19:26

Shortly before 4.00 p.m. on Thursday 12th January 2007, Swindon Police responded to an incident at Ridgeway School, Wroughton. At the end of the school day, a 15 year old pupil was assaulted in the Tennis Courts at the school. He suffered serious head injuries and was initially taken by ambulance to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon but later transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. His condition today is described as stable. He is conscious and communicative and currently awaiting surgery.

Eight youths, aged between 14 and 20 years, very quickly arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remain in custody at Gablecross Police Station. All eight suspects are from visible minority ethnic origins.

At this stage of the investigation the assault appears to be the result of personal tension between the victim and a fellow pupil at Ridgeway School. The two boys met up in the Tennis Courts where they were joined by a group of youths not connected to the school. The group, unknown to the victim, assaulted him, causing serious head injuries and then fled from the scene. The weapon used in the attack is believed to be a metal type implement, possibly a hammer.

Whilst the motive for the assault is believed to be personal, police are paying close attention to any community impact due to the different ethnicities involved.

At this time there is no indication to link the assault to a previous incident at the school in May 2006, or to the same suspects.

As a precautionary and reassurance measure a visible police presence has been maintained in and around the school today and will continue on Monday.

Superintendent Kevin Maidment, Swindon Police:

"In view of the seriousness of the incident and the potential effect on our wider community a meeting of partner agencies and Community Leaders was held at Gablecross Police Station this afternoon.

The meeting, chaired by Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Andrew Tatam, was attended by partner agencies, including Head Teachers, Councillors and Community Leaders. Also present at the meeting was a representative of the Wiltshire Police Authority and South Swindon MP, Anne Snelgrove. The meeting was productive and reinforced the importance of police, partners and communities working together.

Communities across Swindon are reassured that this type of incident is rare and we are working more closely than ever with partner agencies and communities to create a safer Swindon.

A further meeting of this group is planned for Tuesday 16th January 2007."
