Police promote safer school parking
Posted: 13/01/2007 13:49:39
Police in Bromsgrove are to launch an initiative promoting safer parking outside the town’s schools.
This follows the issue of dangerous and illegal parking near schools at drop-off and pick-up times being raised at several PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings in Bromsgrove in recent months.
Sergeant Nick Husbands from Bromsgrove police explains, “We’ve received increasing numbers of complaints from local residents who, day after day, before and after school, have their driveways obstructed or their own cars blocked in by those who park inconsiderately as they do the school run.
“And not only are these drivers causing misery to those living near schools, they are also blocking access for emergency vehicles.
“Parking in this manner is a form of anti-social behaviour and this safer parking initiative has been devised in direct response to this issue.” Police say that the first part of this scheme is to educate drivers on the school run, ensuring that they understand the nuisance that they are creating by parking inconsiderately or in many cases, the dangers, both for local residents and their own children.
Officers and CSOs will be visiting four local first schools from Monday 22 January, handing out information leaflets and giving advice to parents on safer parking. Junctions, double yellow lines and other locations where it would be illegal or dangerous to park will be coned off and officers will be on hand to discuss safety issues and considerate parking with those taking children to the targeted schools.
These include Catshill First & Middle School in Gibb Lane & Meadow Road, Lickey End First School in School Lane, Meadows First School in Stourbridge Road and also Sidemoor First School in Broad Street.
Sgt Husbands adds, “We understand all too well the time pressures that parents are under but safety must be paramount and this is our principal objective with this scheme.
“The last thing we want to do is issue tickets outside schools but we would have to consider this option if parents continue to park dangerously following the education phase of our park safely initiative.”
Anyone receiving a fixed penalty notice for parking would face a fine of £30 or a fine of £60 with three penalty points for more serious parking offences.
