Bike It Barnstaple
Posted: 17/01/2007 10:23:51
North Devon’s traffic wardens will soon be putting their best wheels forward when they are put through their paces and trained in the fine tradition of the Cycling proficiency test.
The wardens are to be tested as part of Devon and Cornwall Constabularies force policy that all bicycle users are fully conversant with the road safety and casual reduction issues connected to cycling.
The wardens have been using Bicycles for regular patrols in Barnstaple since October 2005, when two Saracen Mountain bikes were loaned by Mr Norman Taylor of the “BIKE IT” bicycle shop in Newport, Barnstaple.
The introduction of the bikes has proven to be highly effective giving the wardens an immediate response to road traffic collisions and other blockages in the towns road system where they regularly assist their Police officer colleagues.
The cycling proficiency test is a scheme the force is keen to promote and the traffic wardens safe use of their Bicycles on the road is testament to the sound training provided.
Senior traffic warden Kate Olds said, “The public response to Traffic wardens on bikes since Mr Taylor made his kind donation has been fantastic. Residents and business proprietors alike have commented on the effectiveness and speed with which wardens can reach congested areas and deal immediately with incidents”.
“We are all looking forward to being put through are paces and are confident that the scheme teaches practical and tested advice on how to keep safe whilst cycling on the road.”
