Exeter's newest school wins warm plaudits

Posted: 17/01/2007 10:32:30

Exeter's newest primary school has won a string of plaudits from education inspectors - just 15 months after it opened.

They say that every aspect of life at Clyst Heath Nursery and Community Primary School is good with some outstanding features.

Parents are "unstinting" in their praise for the new school while pupils feel safe and happy and really enjoy coming to school.

Devon County Council built the school to serve the growing Clyst Heath community.

It opened in September 2005 as part of the successful reorganisation of education in Exeter.

Inspectors from the school standards agency, Ofsted, visited Clyst Heath in December and their report has just been published.

Lead inspector Anna Sketchley concludes: "The school has got off to a very successful start because of the exemplary leadership of the headteacher, deputy and governors.

"In the short time it has been open, it has done extremely well to establish a good quality of education for its pupils."

Teaching is good and pupils achieve well with above average standards in maths, science and reading, says Ms Sketchley.

Relationships between adults and pupils and among the children themselves are excellent.

The children settle in well and respond keenly to their lively lessons.

"They really enjoy coming to school and taking part in all the activities provided for them," says the report.

One pupil told the inspectors: "Within five minutes of joining the school, I had five friends."

Clyst Heath was graded on seven areas of school life; overall effectiveness; achievement and standards; personal development; teaching and learning; curriculum; care, guidance and support and leadership and management. All were good.

The inspectors said that the school and the pupils' contribution to their local community was outstanding and headteacher Karen Hadley and her deputy Rachael Johnson demonstrated outstanding partnership and teamwork.

"They have set up a very clear vision for the school's development," says Ms Sketchley. "Close and effective cooperation at all levels of leadership and management give the school a good capacity to improve."

Today Mrs Hadley and chair of governors, James Crooks, said: "We are delighted with these findings.

"It is a great accolade for the school which has only been open for 15 months.

"The success of the school has only been possible because of our hardworking staff, pupils and governors and the continued support of our parents and local community."

They said the report also gave a clear direction for the next two years.

Ms Sketchley said the school had implemented plans to raise standards in writing which were now average but these had not yet had time to have an impact. Work should continue here and in raising levels of attendance even higher.
