New carpets for North Devon Library

Posted: 19/01/2007 16:16:02

The North Devon Library and Record Office in Barnstaple will be re-carpeted next month.

The library building was opened in 1988 and still has the original carpets which have, since then, been walked on by 1,200 people a day.

Now the old stained and worn floor coverings are to be replaced during the week beginning Monday 12 February.

The building will be closed for a week, and work will continue for around ten days after it reopens which may leave some areas of the library inaccessible.

The work of laying the carpet will be carried out by local firm North Devon Flooring, while Rose Removals will manage the substantial movement of stock and shelving involved in the refurbishment.

Geoff King, North Devon Library Manager, said: "The library here in Barnstaple is a very busy place and I think the original carpet has done a great job. But now is the time to look to the future with a substantial refurbishment which should make the building even more welcoming to our users.

"We will do our best to minimise any inconvenience to the public - we will allow extra loans to anyone who needs them, we will continue to provide a telephone information service and there will be a book bin for people who wish to leave books."

Executive Member for Culture, Councillor Sheila Hobden, said: "This work is very necessary and is part of Devon County Council's commitment to improving the library service that we offer people. I am sure local library users will notice a big difference."

The new carpet will include a large area of barrier matting to keep the new carpet looking clean attractive by excluding dirt being brought in on users' shoes. The new carpet will be a mottle green colour, with light brown carpets on the stairs for safety reasons, and softer quality carpet in the children's library.

The carpets will cost 14,700, with fitting and removals costs of 7,000 and 6,000 respectively. The work is being paid for from the existing budget which is set for maintenance of libraries and is not a new burden on council tax.
