Lechlade police meetings cancelled
Posted: 01/11/2005 12:33:27
A regular opportunity for Lechlade residents to meet and speak with their local police officers has been discontinued due to lack of public interest reports the Gloucestershire Police.
South Cotswolds police have cancelled their weekly police surgeries in Lechlade because so few people were attending the events.
Formerly held on Wednesday evenings at the council offices in Oak Street, the surgeries gave residents a chance to report crime and incidents in person, and to discuss any policing issues they may have had with local officers.
Insp Mike Jacka, commander of the South Cotswolds Inspector Neighbourhood Area, said officers detailed to staff the surgeries were not being used effectively. The surgeries were set up at the end of July to allow the public to meet and speak with their local officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), he said. At least one, and occasionally two, officers or PCSOs used to attend the Memorial Centre in Oak Street every Wednesday to engage with the public. The response from residents was initially quite good, but the number of people who came to see officers dwindled significantly in a short period. The time of officers and PCSOs was not being used effectively so the decision was made to cancel the surgeries. Police and PCSOs will still carry out regular patrols in Lechlade, and they will be pleased to speak with any members of the public who approach them. Residents can also engage with police by attending their local Police Community Consultative Meeting, or by calling 0845 090 1234 Source : Gloucestershire Constabulary web site
