New youth club opens in Exeter

Posted: 22/01/2007 10:02:36

A new youth club will opens its doors for the first time this week to young people in the Whipton/Heavitree area.

Based at the Grenville Centre on the old St Luke's High School site, the club will be run by Devon County Council's Youth Service, to provide a range of activities for young people on Wednesday and Friday evenings. Facilities include a gymnasium and drama and dance area as well as a social area with pool table, electronic games and audio visual equipment.

John Man, Team Leader for Devon County Council's Youth Service in Exeter said: "During the first few weeks we will be looking for ideas from young people to help shape the way the club runs. The activities will ultimately be determined by the young people who use them, so their views and ideas are essential, and we would encourage as many young people as possible to come along."

The club is open to young people 13 years and over (Year 9 upwards) on Wednesdays, and 11 and 12-year-olds (Years 7 and 8) on Friday evenings, from 6.45 to 9.15pm. It has been set up in collaboration with St Luke's High School, where students have been regularly consulted throughout the set-up process.

Cllr John Smith, Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services said: "We are grateful for the support from the Grenville Centre, who are letting us use their premises, and to St Luke's School, who have enabled us to find out what young people in the area really want from their youth club.

"This excellent facility will provide a focal point for young people to meet, socialise and enjoy a range of activities, with youth service staff on hand to offer advice and information on all aspects of our service."

The club opens its door next Wednesday, 24 January. It is hoped young people from the Heavitree, Whipton, Whipton Barton, Clyst Heath, Broadfields and Pinhoe areas will use the centre. Local Devon County Councillors Cllr Olwen Foggin, Cllr Andrew Leadbetter and Cllr Jill Owen have also been involved in the project, and have contributed to it through their allocation from the County Committees budget - for specific projects in their local area.

Councillor Foggin has committed her entire County Committee budget - 7,300 - to the project. Welcoming the opening, she said: "I am absolutely delighted to see this vital services to local young people come to fruition, and am pleased to have used my budget to pump prime the project.

"I have been campaigning for some time to establish a youth club in this area, which suffers from a lack of good youth facilities, and I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard in making this happen."
